The area along the border of Maine and New Hampshire near The White Mountain National Forest provides the subject matter for my work. These paintings are tributes to nature and interpretations of the grandeur of this region.
Over the years my aesthetic concerns have varied yet, the reverence I have for nature remains a constant, and bearing witness to this natural environment continues to inspire my pursuits as an artist.
I return frequently to Maine and New Hampshire to paint en plein air (in the open air). For many years I have explored the terrain, climbed the mountains and canoed the waters often with my sketchbook, paints and brushes. The ever-changing light, cloud formations, shadows on the mountains, and wind on the water present tremendous options for artistic choice. Back in my studio these studies and experiences serve as source material for larger paintings.
It is my aim that this intensely, gratifying work produces paintings with a powerful visual appeal that convey my passion for this area, the splendor of nature, and a sense of place.
